Why Listen to Me?

I’ve been in the marketing space for the last 6 years. Mainly as a copywriter helping tech companies and environmental blogs with their content.

All the while, I was hearing about the turbulence the game industry was (and is) going through.

 I eventually asked myself:

What Makes Marketing a Game Different?

So I took the courses and spoke with the devs (you’ll often find me X asking devs about their games).

What I’ve found is THAT it boils down to the runway you give your game.

What Runway?

Let’s say you have a 12-month dev cycle.

Most indies don’t start marketing until they are mere months from release.

But that’s like building the runway while the plane is landing.

Rule of thumb: Your marketing begins when development does.

What If I Have Nothing to Show?

Early on, you’re not marketing the game as a product but the game as a story.

  • Why are you creating it?
  • What inspiration does it pull from?
  • If someone likes X game, will they like this?

Gamers become invested even before they see gameplay
